Squall in Kingdom Hearts

Perhaps one of Squall's most noticible role in a cross-over game is in Kingdom Hearts. Square-Enix and Buena Vista Entertainment (Disney's gaming branch) have collaborated to make it. The director of the game is Tetsuya Nomura, who is the character designer of past Final Fanstasies, such as Final Fantasy 7, 8, and 10. This explains why Squall, among other characters, are characters Sora can interact with in this game. He is an unplayable; however, his story seems to have a nice interesting twist.

In the game, he's refered to as Leon, he's 25, and his homeworld was destroyed 10 years prior to the game. He changed his name for some unamed reason, but Yuffie occasionally calls him "Squall" by accident. In the game, you get to battle him in the Olympus Coliseum, along with Yuffie. He has an underground training ground/hideout too, that runs in the sewers under Traverse Town. Somehow, he and King Mickey know each other, because Mickey had sent Donald and Goofy to go search for him. Oh, and his voice actor is David Boreanaz, who portrays him very nicely. His Japanese Seiyuu is Hideo Ishikawa, who also did the voice of Auron in FFX.

The one interessting thing I found about Squall Leon was the Angel wing motif on the back of his jacket. If you were paying attention (which I HOPE you were), Rinoa has the same design right behind her cardigan. You can find proof here. I don't know if manga is good enough for you, but I don't have an in-game screen yet =\

Whether or not events from the Final Fantasy VIII also took place in his own world in Kingdom Hearts is questionable. His world was destroyed when he was 15, and none of the events of the FF8 take place until he's 17. So techincally, he hasn't even met Rinoa. However, the angle motif on the back of his jacket raises another question, and doesn't make any kind of logical sense. This is what gives it the twist, because he must have met Rinoa, but with a different story.

He also appears a a neat little pixel in GBA's Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. There really isn't any kind of new information in the game, because it mostly just recalls events that already happened in KH.

Squall expected to be seen again in the upcoming sequel, Kingdom Hearts II. Hopefully we'll be able to learn more about him.
