Sleeping Lion Heart

Squall’s symbol/logo/necklace/whatever is a Lion over a Cross.. Here, I’ll try to explain what this word means to me. Keyword: try. The descriptions are from the Online Symbolism Dictionary

Lion: The lion is a very diverse symbol. Its most common traits are: majesty, bravery, strength, courage, justice, and military might. It can be both solar and lunar. Commonly referred to as "the king of the beasts," it is a symbol of Kingly power and might, but as the lioness it is commonly related to the Great Mother and protection. In a Christian context, the lion can be the power and might of Christ, or the open maw of Satan. Greek myth links this beast to Hercules and his epic wrestling match with a supernatural lion, which no earthly weapon could harm. In this context the lion is death, beaten by the solar hero. After killing the lion with his bare hands, Hercules wore its skin as a sort of armor.

Cross: It is a world center and therefore a point of communication between heaven and earth and a cosmic axis, thus sharing the symbolism of the cosmic tree, mountain, etc. The cross represents the Tree of Life and the Tree of Nourishment; it is also a symbol of universal, archetypal man, capable of infinite and harmonious expansion on both the horizontal and vertical planes; the vertical line is the celestial, spiritual and intellectual, positive, active and male, while the horizontal is the earthly, rational, passive, and negative and female, the whole cross forming the primordial androgyny. [In Christian terms], it is the salvation through Christ's sacrifice; redemption; atonement; suffering; faith. The cross also signifies “acceptance of death or suffering and sacrifice". Crossroads are often thought of as symbolizing points of intersection between the paths of living and the dead; and as a framework for coordinates, the cross gives people the ability to orient themselves within space and time. Acts as an amulet against danger, weapon against monster, even devil.

Okay, lemme make all the gibberish into sense. The thing that I wanted to point out was “bravery” and “sacrifice”. A lion over a cross. Bravery over sacrifice. Keyword: protection. Squall doesn’t want to sacrifice anything, so he protects it with himself; the lion. But who is the sacrifice? Well, this is pretty easy. Who is the most vulnerable, is wanted by a powerful sorceress, gets captured, and Squall promised to protect; be a knight to? Rinoa. Think of a to-be sorceress as a sacrifice. Most likely this person wouldn't want to “inherit” these powers. Sure, becoming a sorceress may seem pretty cool (for all you power-hungry people), but at what expense? You’ll have to be constantly protected, you could go insane at any moment, and you probably(yes, probably) won’t be able to age like a normal human. That means the knight you first hired won’t be able to live as long as you, so you might end up going insane at one point. Oh, did I mention the metamorphosis that results in making you look like you don’t want to take you Halloween costume off? Yeah. So, that makes Rinoa the sacrifice; the sacrifice to a curse. I’m not saying having these powers isn’t a gift either; it just tends to lean toward the “curse” side.

The other thing I get is protection. Maybe it’s Squall’s good luck charm? Actually, I once thought it had the same function as a cross in Christianity. Like how most people would wear a cross as protection from evil. Nothing involving anything religious though. Squall is a rather…err… worldly person. He doesn’t make mention of him believing in that Hyne stuff.

Oh, there’s also one more little detailed it mentioned space and time. Space; he went to space risking his life for Rinoa. Time; time compression. He saved the world from time compression. Then there goes the “ability to orient themselves within space and time”. Well, he and Rinoa certainly did survive both of those ^^;;

I think Squall’s necklace is a symbol of both his relationship with Rinoa and protection. His whole life up to this point was about protecting himself in this shell of a fake persona. And, well, love was one of the game’s themes. Or, Nomura probably just thought it looked really cool xD So, there you have it! Gah, I’m so bored X_x
